The science magazine ¡De acuerdo! – La ciencia a tu medida (¡De acuerdo! – Science made to your measure) has published its 10th issue. We would like to congratulate the magazine’s authors and technical collaborators as well as members of the editorial and executive boards on this special occasion. We are also looking forward to discovering new and exciting content through diverse media tools in the future.
The Latin American magazine, which was created in San José, Costa Rica, in 2012, has set itself the task of publishing topics from the field of metrology in a modern and visually appealing format, while using colloquial language to reach young people in particular. The magazine was modelled after PTB’s publication Maßstäbe, and PTB’s graphic designer Alberto Parra del Riego supported the development of the project from the beginning.
¡De acuerdo! is published in print and digitally on an annual basis in Spanish and is produced by a group of national metrology institutes (NMIs). It was organized from the beginning as a joint cooperation effort between NMIs in the Latin American region with PTB’s participation. Today, the Sistema Interamericano de Metrología (SIM) is the editor of the magazine. The content is mainly created by scientific journalists, and technical input is provided by metrology experts from the participating countries.
The magazine aims not only to inform readers, but also to pique curiosity about the importance of metrology in our daily lives. Each issue is dedicated to a theme such as water, energy, football, music, food or sustainability. Young people learn that nothing works without metrology through concrete examples: it ensures that we can buy healthy food, football is only fair if all the measurements on the pitch are correct and there are fixed rules, or precise measurement is crucial when building musical instruments so that they can develop their full sound later on. The editorial team is also keen to highlight the fundamental role metrology plays in innovation and the development of countries worldwide. Its importance for development cooperation can also be derived from this, as only a functioning metrological system can ensure that a country is economically independent.
As PTB, we are proud to be able to contribute to this important and interesting magazine. We look forward to many more years of cooperation. Once again, we congratulate ¡De acuerdo! for reaching its10th issue of knowledge transfer and raising the interest in metrology of future generations!
