Four green hydrogen scholarships awarded
Namibia has one of the world’s highest potentials of wind and solar power generation. In 2020 the country created a vision of producing green hydrogen and developing a green economy. Namibia is inspiring the international hydrogen community. Projects are being developed with its unprecedented dynamic hydrogen production as well as with upstream and downstream value chains. A generation of Namibians is now striving for qualifications and employment in the sector.
Germany intends to use green hydrogen to decarbonize its economy and will largely depend on imports of green hydrogen. The governments of Namibia and Germany have established a hydrogen partnership that will benefit both countries. The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is part of an institutional partnership that is developing a quality infrastructure for the Green Hydrogen Economy in Namibia. This partnership is funded by the BMWK, Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
PTB recently joined the Youth for Green Hydrogen Scholarship Programme 2024 sponsored by the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research). We also signed up with the ERA Fellowships – Green Hydrogen initiative run by the European Research Executive Agency and the DAAD (the German academic exchange service). PTB then became a host institution for four Namibian Master’s students and welcomed Mona, Ndapanda, Rose and Paul from the University of Namibia (UNAM) for their six-month research visit.
The Master’s students were interviewed by Sabine Thomas for Candela while they were in Germany. They talked about their research projects at PTB, living in Namibia and what their futures might bring. You can find out more about what was said if you read our series of blogposts that focus on these interviews.
