Approximately 1,000 participants from all over the world are expected at the IMEKO 2024 World Congress from 26 to 29 August 2024
The city and state of Hamburg will welcome approximately 1,000 scientists from all over the world with the typical local greeting “Moin!” at the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) from 26 to bis 29 August. The international association IMEKO (International Measurement Confederation), which literally travels around the world with its triennial congress, is hosting this event. Hamburg is the next stop after Prague, Belfast and Yokohama. This major event in the field of metrology, the science of measurement, will deal with current metrological developments for the technological applications of tomorrow and carry out special workshops about highly topical fields, from quantum technology to digital transformation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
For the host and current president of IMEKO, Dr. Frank Härtig, the World Congress is also a major event in terms of content: “Such an international platform for discussing virtually all metrological developments is unparalleled. For this dialogue to be a success, the stage needs to be perfectly prepared. I’m incredibly proud of my team for their outstanding organization of this congress – a task on a remarkable scale.”
After looking forward to this event for a long time, the participants can expect a week packed with plenary lectures by well-known speakers (among others, Nobel laureate Prof. Dr. Klaus von Klitzing and Prof. Dr. Stefan Hell), work meetings in 25 different Technical Committees, the workshops mentioned above as well as excursions to scientific/technical institutions in Hamburg: Airbus Hamburg, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), Eichdirektion Nord, Energie Messtechnik GmbH (EMH), Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility GmbH (XFEL) and the ZAL Center for Applied Aviation Research. All of these supporters deserve a heartfelt thank you.
As part of the congress, the most important prize in the world of measurement, the Helmholtz Prize, will be awarded to two research groups on Wednesday, 28 August. The president of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Prof. Dr. Cornelia Denz, will award the prize.
When the metrological community travels to Germany from all over the world, a visit at one of the largest metrological institutions of the world is of course a must. A majority of the participants will head to Braunschweig to visit the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) a day after the conference (Friday, 30 August), where taking part in an extensive visitors’ program to PTB’s laboratories is on the agenda.
For Dr. Frank Härtig, who is not only the president of IMEKO, but also the vice-president of PTB, that will be familiar territory. “PTB is looking forward to this metrological ‘family gathering’ in Hamburg and Braunschweig. This is how the metrological community sees itself – a unit contributing to scientific and economic progress”, says Dr. Härtig.
