The transition towards a green economy has become an urgent need both in the industrialized world as well as in developing and emerging countries. It implies the accelerated diffusion of various green technologies, which in turn generates opportunities for domestic value creation in terms of learning, the localization of supply chains, and employment. A pre-condition for the effective development and diffusion of green technologies and for an increase in competitiveness is the presence of well-functioning national quality infrastructure systems. Quality infrastructure comprises standards, conformity assessment (that is, inspection, testing and certification), metrology and accreditation. Quality infrastructure is necessary for securing access to new markets, improving productivity, enabling innovation, and ensuring environmental and consumer protection. Building up relevant quality infrastructure capabilities is, therefore, decisive for effectively using, adapting and innovating technologies.
To examine the connections between green technologies and quality infrastructure in developing countries, PTB has conducted a study in collaboration with the German Development Institute | Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik | DIE. The study evaluates which technologies are most relevant and how quality infrastructure interventions can support the transition towards a green economy. It also explores three case studies in more detail: India, Morocco, and Ethiopia.
The study is available on the DIE website under this link.
It will be presented to the public during a virtual launch event with an expert round table to present and discuss the results from the study. Special attention will be given to the following:
- Which green technologies are diffusing in developing countries and at what pace?
- What quality infrastructure interventions are needed to support and benefit from this transition?
- What are the implications for development cooperation programmes aimed at enabling the transition to a green economy?
Please join us at the virtual launch on Wednesday, September 30th from 2 to 4 pm CEST.
