On 26 February 2025, Djibouti reached an important milestone for the country’s economic development: Ron Osman Omar, Director of Industry, Minerals, Entrepreneurship and Tourism at the African Union Commission, submitted the National Quality Policy of the Republic of Djibouti during a meeting at the Ministry of Trade and Tourism. In her speech, she pointed out that this document had been developed in a process involving all relevant actors and had been validated in a joint workshop in 2024.

Djibouti is a small country with a little more than 1.1 million inhabitants. It mainly relies on its service sector, which generates approximately 80 % of its gross domestic product. Due to its location at the Horn of Africa and the access to the Red Sea, it is a world trade hub and a transit centre for Ethiopia and the region.
The new quality policy is an important factor to sustainably strengthen the country’s economic position and competitiveness. It is in line with the recommendations of the African Quality Policy that has been established in 2021. Quality assurance services in Djibouti are therefore being adapted to international standards, which will facilitate their mutual recognition in the region.
The Minister of Trade and Tourism, H.E. Mohamed Warsama Dirieh, thanked the African Union Commission as well as PTB, the German national metrology institute, who provided financial and technical support as a development partner. He emphasized his government’s commitment to implementing the quality policy and to establishing national facilities for quality assurance.
With the new quality policy, Djibouti will be able to effectively develop quality assurance services and to support a sustainable economic development for itself as well as for the entire region.
